Though I may be intrigued by the ornate and large lighting designs, I am far more inspired and drawn to the simple elements of lighting. It is when the design is stripped away of its aesthetic that the true product can be revealed: the light itself.
It is no doubt due to my interest in simplicity that I am drawn to both hidden and natural light.
Hidden Lighting
Bill May: Torn Lights.
These lights are meant to look as if the wall is peeling away, revealing light from within. The space is literally accomidating to allow the passage and necessity of light. Though simple the fixture may be, it demands attention.
Recessed Floor Lighting
What interests me about this form of lighting is its interactive nature. It becomes part of the space around it. People may walk through the space, free of lighting that may get in the way. It is very much a way finding strategy as well. The lighting will aid in guiding when other light is scarce.
Natural Lighting
West Village Town Home
The use of natural light as walls is intriguing to me. It connects residents to the space beyond their living quarters. In this town home, it acts as the main light source in the space. In turn, the space itself is influenced greatly by the time of day or various weather conditions.
The natural light is captured, almost artistically in this loft. As the day continues, the light alters, and therefore effects the atmosphere of the room.
DUB Studios: Soho Loft
The nature of this loft is very simple. It allows the space itself to evoke a certain ambiance. Though slightly narrow, the window walls give the illusion of loft that is open to its surrounding environment. The man made lighting in the space is minimal, for there is hardly any need for it.
